Book Reviews

A Course in Miracles states that God created us by extending His mind to us. Therefore, the body is not our true identity, but an illusion that enables the perception of separation. It is the manifestation in time and space of a false self-identification that comes about through the desire to be separate from God, separate from others, and separate from the oneness of creation.

The desire to be separate is a mistake within the mind. Once this mistake has been accepted by the mind, the result is false self-identification. The Course encourages us to pursue healing of the mind, which is the undoing of sickness of the mind or relinquishment of the desire to be separate from the oneness of creation.

Although A Course in Miracles clearly states these concepts, few who have written about it have been willing to totally accept the significant shift in perspective required by its premises. If one is not willing to accept these premises, much of its content is difficult to understand.

A Few Thoughts About the Course explores the concept from A Course in Miracles that the body is not our true identity, but rather a false self-identity. It also explores the concepts of separation and oneness and shows how it may be possible for us to believe in the apparent reality of separation, even though separation is false, and oneness is true.

It then proceeds to show that our ability to accept the false perspective of separation and our inability to comprehend the truth of oneness come about from three key concepts emphasized throughout A Course in Miracles. These are: the reversal of cause and effect; the belief that ideas can leave their source; and level confusion.
